100 Black Men of the Bay Area Community School Suspends Operations
OUSD Working with Families During the School’s Transition
Oakland, CA – December 19, 2013 – In order to strengthen the financial and instructional systems of the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area Community School, its Board of Directors will suspend operations at the school effective January 24, 2014. The charter school, founded in 2012, currently has 77 male students in kindergarten through seventh grades.
“We are not closing the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area Community School, but suspending its operations while we work to rebuild the school’s financial, operational, and instructional systems,” said Mark Alexander, Chairman of the school’s Board of Directors.
The school’s administration is currently partnering with the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) to help families identify schools where Community School students can enroll. The District is supporting the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area Community School through this process and working to minimize the disruption for displaced students. According to Alexander “The school’s primary goal is working with OUSD and helping parents and their children transition to the best educational environments possible for the remainder of the 2013-2014 academic year. That transition process has already begun and OUSD has been extremely helpful in providing assistance to our parents.”
“We plan to re-emerge from this rebuilding period better positioned to serve our target student population and deliver on the goals in our charter. The 100 Black Men of the Bay Area remains as committed as ever to our vision and our school’s charter which is to eliminate the significant disparities that plague African-American boys in Oakland, the Bay Area, and beyond,” added Alexander.
